From the Latin word “grandis”, which in French became “grand”, meaning great, large.

It was used as an English and Scottish surname.

In the U.S.A. the name may be given in honor of Ulysses S. Grant, Commanding General of the Union forces during the Civil War, who later became President of the country.

Famous bearers are Grant Green, Grant Wood, Thomas Grant Gustin, Grant Show.

Jazz guitarist Grant Green is considered a great blues interpreter and he was renowned for his unique tone.

Although he was overshadowed by other guitarists of his time, he has been a major influence for great musicians such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Carlos Santana.
